This reminds me of the scene in Blazing Saddles where Gene Wilder warns Cleavon Little not to shoot Mongo (former football middle linebacker Alex Karras) “because it will only piss him off”. I have read about too many Brown Bear vs. Man encounters where a bears charge didn’t stop even after taking slugs from high powered rifles that constituted mortal wounds. Pepper spray will certainly discourage a would be mugger, but I’m not the guy who wants to find out if it will slow down a Grizzly.

I would rather bring pepperspray then a shotgun when travelling in the wild.. Bears have an excellent scent of smell, one of the best in the animal kingdom actually, and pepperspray scares them off.. A bullet only pisses them off, unless your lucky enough to hit their tennisball-sized brain while theyre rushing towards you.. good luck! :)

Bear spray is extremly effective but I highly reccomend you practice with it first. Make sure you are cognizant of the wind direction and be sure to spray and fog the air before the bear get within 10-20 ft of you
